'STYLISH POINT AND SHOOT COMPACT SAFE TO 40M'
Strengths: A stylish and sleek compact camera with a 2.5" LCD screen, 8 mega pixels, 5x optical zoom, a raft of colour options and a sneaky diagonal sliding lens cover. Only a handful of features have dedicated buttons on the camera body but those that are there are well chosen and easy to use. A bewildering array of options and pre-set modes are accessible through the easy to navigate menu system. The most important in this case being the dedicated underwater mode which warms up the picture, replacing the reds lost underwater. The macro is function has a dedicated "On/Off" button. Double O-ring sealed Housing with locking cam closure is reassuringly solid and well thought out. All of the features and functions are accessible with the camera in the housing. As the lens cover can't be opened with the camera in the housing, the image review button doubles as an On/Off switch and is handily labelled "Power" on the housing. The manual is comprehensive and easy to understand, going into great detail about keeping the case water tight. This mainly consists of keeping the O-rings free from dirt, lightly greased and replacing them at the first sign of damage. Apart from all of the usual cables, discs and paraphernalia the box contains a tube of grease, 3 packets of desiccant and tool to remove the O-rings without damaging them.
Weaknesses: While strobes can be easily added, there is no way to change or augment the lens, which is not particularly wide angle. While the flash makes a valiant effort, and it is certainly effective within 1m in 5-6m visibility in the shallows, it is quite small and mounted close to the lens so there is noticeable backscatter.
Overall: As a day to day, point and shoot camera which can also be taken under water it is difficult to fault the Z100. 8 mega pixels is fine up to A4 size and all the features and functions, including the housing, are practical and easy to use. People looking for something more serious in the same size and price range should consider the F series cameras. But if all you want to do is take snaps of your underwater adventures this is an excellent choice.
