'FOR ENTRY-LEVEL PERFORMANCE, LOOK NO FURTHER'
Strengths: Ralf-Tech build quality, minimal clutter and a pleasurable diving experience make this an above par BCD.
Weaknesses: The bladder is on the small side, and feature-wise the Classic Tech lacks some of the bells and whistles of cheaper rivals.
Overall: Have to agree overall with Mr Hood's analysis, the Classic Tech is a fine BCD executed with some style. Already a Ralf-Tech owner (Evolution Tech), the Classic however packs fewer pockets, d-rings and the like than it's pricier sibling. The two pinch clips on the chest enable it to collapse down more in the manner of a typical 'club' style buoyancy vest and I suspect price is the only thing stopping it from finding it's way into more BSAC cupboards. As a travel BC it again excels; light on both weight and unnecessary components, you shouldn't have any heart-stopping moments at the check-in desk, nor at 30 metres. If there's a gripe, then the pockets (2) aren't going to be able to store many essentials, and some may feel too that it's light on rings. But horses for courses, if you need to carry lights, stage bottles and god knows what else then you're reading the wrong review. Possibly the best feature about this - and I suspect, most - Ralf Tech products is the craftsmanship. Pick it up and play with it: solid hoses, stitching, inflator buttons and fabric materials that leave many competitors feeling cheap and nasty. I don't know about you, but I don't want to rely on a BCD with the build quality and refinement of a Christmas Cracker. A newly qualified diver looking for a first BCD? if you can stretch to it, you won't be disappointed.
